Upon coming to the United States, they join the Manhattan Project effort to bring down the Reich. Working on "the bomb" exposes everyone to high doses of radiation. Elizabeth's eventual death from cancer caused by that exposure to radiation sends Victor into a spiral of depression, addiction and PTSD.
